Labels
WonderMail has two kinds of labels. Here's the difference between them, how to create and apply them, and how the Labels pane works.
The two kinds of label
- Global labels (the default) live only in WonderMail and can be applied to any email in any connected account.
- Account labels belong to one email account and are mirrored to that account: a label in Gmail, a folder in Outlook or IMAP.
Pro Tip: prefer global labels unless you need the label to exist in Gmail or Outlook. They can be stacked without limit and never move mail on the server.
Creating labels
Create either kind in Settings → Labels. Choose 'All accounts (global)' for a global label, or pick an account to create an account label. Renaming or deleting an account label also renames or deletes it on Gmail, Outlook or IMAP; renaming or deleting one there flows back to WonderMail on the next sync.
Account labels can be nested: choose a parent label when creating one. That becomes a Gmail sub-label (Parent/Child) or a real subfolder in Outlook and IMAP.
Because Outlook and IMAP treat labels as folders, an email can carry only one account label at a time — applying a new one replaces the previous one and moves the email on the server. Global labels are unlimited and never move anything.
Labels you already created in Gmail, Outlook or IMAP appear automatically as account labels after a sync.
Applying and finding labels
- J opens the label picker over the full email-list column and assigns a label to the open email. The label icon also sits under the More button in the reading pane toolbar.
- L opens the same full-column picker, then labels and archives in one step. Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to select a label, then press Enter to apply it. It works the same way for Gmail, Outlook and IMAP accounts.
- Both work on a multi-selection too.
- Click a label in the sidebar to filter the list to it, and click it again to clear the filter. Opening a label also ends any search you are running, so the list shows that label right away.
- A label lists everything filed under it, archived mail included. Archiving a conversation yourself (E, the Archive button, the right-click menu, a batch archive or Archive after sending) keeps every label attached, so the conversation remains in each label — with one exception: while you are viewing a label, archiving (E or the Archive button) removes that label as it archives, and Undo restores both. Moving a conversation to Trash from a label view (X or the Trash button) removes that label the same way, so it no longer appears in the label, and Undo restores both. Gmail keeps those labels on the account too; Outlook and IMAP move the message to their Archive folder while WonderMail preserves its former folder label.
- While a label is open, the Select All button at the top of the list selects every conversation with that label, including ones you haven't scrolled to yet, so you can archive, label or snooze them all in one step.
- You can also drag a conversation from the email list onto any label in the Labels pane: releasing it applies that label and archives the conversation, so you'll find it under the label or in Archive. Dragging one of several selected conversations files them all at once, and the toast's Undo puts everything back. Drafts, Sent and Scheduled rows can't be dropped on a label.
Pro Tip: L is the whole triage step, labelling and archiving together, so filing mail costs one keystroke instead of two.
The Labels pane at the bottom-left can be collapsed with its caret, resized by dragging the handle on its top edge, and searched. Drag the handle all the way down to leave only the Labels header, + New button and caret showing. Collapsed with the caret, it always shows your three most recently applied or opened labels in full; starred labels sit above them and are always visible. Hover any label and click its star to pin it — click again to unstar. Starred labels can be dragged into any order you like; Recent and All labels keep their automatic order. The pane's size, collapsed state, starred and recent labels follow you to every browser and device.
