Snooze and Time
Snooze hides an email until you need it. Here's the picker, the shorthand you can type, the quick-snooze buttons, and where snoozed mail returns.
The snooze picker
Z opens the snooze picker. Choose a time on the left under Step #1 - Pick Time, then a date on the right under Step #2 - Pick Date, or type into the Custom box at the top.
In the picker, clicking a time selects it and clicking a date snoozes immediately at that time and closes the picker. If you pick a date first, it uses your configured default time and closes the picker. The Default Time shown at the top of the Time column comes from your settings. When the Custom box contains a valid time, that row shows it instead ("Custom · …"); click the row to clear the custom text and return to your default.
What you can type in the Custom box
- Words: tomorrow, tonight, this evening, morning, noon, weekend, next week, eod (end of day), eow (end of week), and next month. Evening and tonight return at 6:00 PM; eod and eow return at 5:00 PM; the rest use your default snooze time.
- Period dates: 1st day, 1st business day, last day and last business day of the month, quarter or year. Type them in full ("last business day of the quarter", "1st of the month") or as shorthand (bom, eom, boq, eoq, boy, eoy, and eobdm / eobdq / eobdy for the business-day versions). Business day means Monday to Friday; public holidays are not counted.
- Weekdays: type "s" for Saturday or Sunday.
- Month names: "mar" offers March 1, 15 and 31. Everyday short forms work too, so "sept 15" and "sept. 15 at 1pm" are understood, as are "tues", "thur" and "thurs".
- Plain numbers: "5" offers the next 5th of a month plus in 5 minutes/hours/days/weeks/months.
- Shorthand: number plus unit, like 30m, 2h, 3d, 2w or 5mo. You can also put "in" in front, like "in 5 mins", "in 20 days" or "in 3 weeks". Minutes and hours are measured from right now; whole days, weeks, months and years return at your Default day-of-week return time (so "2d" typed at night comes back that morning, not that evening).
- Times: 4pm, 4:30 pm or 1300, plus short forms like 4p (4:00 PM), 5a (5:00 AM) and 430p (4:30 PM). Without am/pm, times up to 5:59 (like 324, 3:24 or 545) mean PM, and 6:00 to 11:59 mean AM; type 545a, 545am or 545 am for 5:45 AM. Add today or tomorrow before or after, e.g. "545pm today" or "324 tomorrow". A typed time shows a matching suggestion under the box — it lands on today, or tomorrow if that time has already passed, and on the calendar day you picked if one is selected. You can also add a weekday in either order, so "6pm th" and "th 6pm" both mean Thursday at 6:00 PM.
The dropdown always offers your last used custom snooze so you can repeat it in one keystroke. The first ↓ highlights the first suggestion (and the first ↑ highlights the last); continue with ↑ and ↓, then press Enter to pick the highlighted one.
Pro Tip: type instead of clicking. "3d", "eow" or "next week" in the Custom box is far faster than navigating the calendar, and Enter takes the highlighted suggestion.
Quick snooze
Use the fixed gray rail between the email list and reading pane for quick snooze: every snooze you configure gets a button there, and the clock beneath them opens the full snooze picker. Settings → Snooze holds up to ten snoozes; the first is F1, the second F2, and so on to F10 (repeat presses double a duration). Each row can be minutes, hours, days, business days (biz day(s), which skip Saturdays and Sundays and return at the same clock time), weeks, months (a fixed 30 days), a day of the week, or a day of period — the 1st day, 1st business day, last day or last business day of the month, quarter or year. Day-of-week and day-of-period rows carry their own return time; rows without one use the Default day-of-week return time at the bottom of the tab. Drag a row by the handle on its left (or focus the handle and press the up and down arrow keys) to reorder your snoozes; the F-keys and the rail buttons renumber to match.
Pro Tip: press F1–F10 repeatedly to double a duration — two presses of a 1h snooze hides an email for 2h without opening the picker.
Where snoozed mail goes
Snoozed email returns to your Follow-Ups box at the chosen time, newest return on top — except a snooze of one hour or less, which comes back to the same box you snoozed it from. Each snooze shows an Undo toast with a countdown.
A snoozed email is only ever in one place. While it is asleep it sits in the Snoozed box, out of its own mailbox and out of any label view. When the time arrives it moves to Follow-Ups and leaves the Snoozed box (or, for a snooze of one hour or less, straight back to its own mailbox). It returns to its mailbox and its labels once you handle it there — archive it, trash it, move it, or snooze it again. Reading it is not enough.
The - key parks an email in the Future box with an importance rating instead, for things you want out of sight but not forgotten.
